I was invited by Obama for America to attend the closing rally in Southern California held on Sunday, February 3, 2008. It was an incredible experience. My wife Julia and I attended along with thousands of other Obama supporters - including celebrities such as Alfre Woodard and Lisa Ling, who were sitting just a few rows away. Special guests at the event included Michelle Obama and Caroline Kennedy. Maria Shriver, California’s first lady, made a surprise historic endorsement of Barack Obama at the event. Stevie Wonder also attended, and at Michelle Obama’s request, performed an impromptu rendition of “Signed Sealed Delivered.”
It was probably one of the best campaign rallies I have ever attended. The energy in the room was amazing! People were so excited to be a part of something bigger than just a campaign – they were a part of something historic. As one of the first LGBT leaders in the state to endorse Obama, I played a key role in the campaign, serving on several leadership committees, helping to organize key communities in the state for Obama, and serving as a spokeswoman for the campaign.
