Contributions are not tax deductible. Rebecca Prozan for Supervisor 2010 may accept contributions of up to $500 from individuals, PACs and non-incorporated business entities; under new San Francisco rules, we may not accept contributions from corporations, whether for profit or not.

We may not deposit your check or credit card payment without your signature, name, street address, occupation and employer, and may not accept cash, cashiers checks or money orders over $99. Among other restrictions, we may not accept contributions from persons who are negotiating City contracts subject to Board of Supervisors approval or who have received such a City contract within the last six months, or from the directors, officers or owners of companies who have received or negotiated such contracts. Contributions must be made from your personal funds and not be reimbursed in any manner.

Rebecca Prozan is running for District 8 Supervisor (which includes the Castro!), and she’ll be sharing her perspective with us between Jason’s soulful and interactive performances. Perhaps she will be pressured into singing a song, as well?

Julia Adams and Rebecca Prozan

Today we are fortunate to celebrate our second year of being legally married.

Julia and I met ten years ago as law students at Golden Gate University. After realizing that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together, we participated in Mayor Willie Brown’s final domestic partners ceremony at City Hall in 2003. As the LGBT liaison to the Mayor, I was instrumental in organizing the first domestic partners ceremony in 1996 – which some could argue began the movement for marriage equality.

In 2004, during a brief period of marriage equality affectionately dubbed the “Winter of Love,” we rushed to City Hall to get hitched on February 13th, the day before Valentine’s Day. The long lines around City Hall, the sheer number of people ready to end their long wait and finally take the plunge, the feeling in the air was palpable – it was something neither of us will ever forget. People were so happy to be able to do something so seemingly simple: take their vows, exchange rings and make it official. Of course it was not that simple, the marriages were halted on March 11th and the licenses that we were all so happy to stand in line to get were voided when the California Supreme Court declared the marriages invalid. We still have the cancelled check from the County Clerk, the “invalid” marriage certificate, and our memories of the happiness and excitement that surrounded everyone in line with us that day.

Through the years, we’ve done everything married couples do. We purchased a home. We have a joint bank account. We adopted a rescue dog. We are each other’s beneficiaries. We care for each other and look after each other. We’ve been lucky to experience so much of the American Dream.

Our final – and bona fide legal – marriage occurred during the legal window in 2008. On September 14th, we held a small ceremony in our backyard surrounded by family and close friends. On this day, on our anniversary, we remember how fortunate we are to be able to be legally wed. My heart goes out to those who have been unable to experience this fundamental right, and I look forward to the day when the right to marry is extended to all.

Marriage is a fundamental right for everyone to enjoy. One day, hopefully soon, we will live in a world that understands that simple concept.
